The Department of Biomedical Technology is synonymous with the top medical technology department. Biomedical engineering is the centre of our interest- the field that our faculty has its name after. We guarantee bachelor and master degree programs in this field and we are also a training centre in doctoral studies. The research teams are focused on artificial pulmonary ventilation, applications of biomedical technology in neurology, mapping of bio electromagnetic activity of the heart, microwave hyperthermia, signal analysis and imaging methods.
We see strong involvement in international cooperation as a prerequisite for quality teaching and research. In addition to a number of Erasmus student exchange agreements (all our students can study abroad for one or two semesters, and many foreign students come to us), we offer all our study programs in English and Russian. At Master's level, we offer, together with 5 top foreign universities, a joint Erasmus Mundus program, in which generous European Commission scholarships are available, especially for students from outside Europe. We have above-standard research cooperation with a number of foreign workplaces. These include RWTH Aachen, University of Sheffield, Faculty of Bioengineering in Iasi, Romania, Faculty of Biomedical Engineering in Kiev, and the Technical University of Kosice.
Apart from the medical regulatory bodies of the Czech Republic, we also cooperate with many Czech hospitals. We cooperate with major Prague hospitals, but also with the University Hospital in Pilsen, Klatovy Hospital, Masaryk Hospital in Ústí nad Labem and many others. We are engaged in a multilateral cooperation with LINET company. There is successful long-term cooperation of the unconventional artificial ventilation team with SensorMedics from the USA. Our department is also an expert institute offering expert opinions concerning medical devices.

The Department of Health Care and Population Protection offers bachelor's degree programs in Physiotherapy, Paramedics, Radiology Assistance, Medical Laboratory Technician, Medical Laboratory Diagnostics, Planning and Management of Crisis Situation. The follow-up Master study program offered is Civil Emergency Planning, and the Department of Health Care and Population Protection is used as a training centre for the doctoral study program Civil Emergency Preparedness.
The Department of Health Care and the Population Protection interconnects health care study programs with programs focused on protection of population and this is reflected in specialisation of our teaching staff and externs. Our academic staff cooperate with a number of top-class workplaces, either medical, such as the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, Central Military Hospital, General University Hospital, University Hospital Motol, Rehabilitation Institute Kladruby, Proton Centre, Emergency Medical Services of the Regions, Clinic THERAP TILIA, or those which focus on protection of the population such as the Fire Rescue Service of the Czech Republic, Institute of Population Protection of the General Directorate of the Fire Rescue Service of the Czech Republic, selected units of the Army of the Czech Republic, State Institute of Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Protection, State Institute for Nuclear Safety, State Institute of Radiation Protection , State Administration of Material Reserves, ORITEST or T-SOFT. In addition, cooperation on solving scientific-research and pedagogical tasks with academic workplaces of some universities is an another benefit, examples being the Police Academy of the Czech Republic, the Technical University of Liberec, the 1st Medical School, Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague, VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava or Faculty of Special Engineering, University of Žilina. Particularly in the area of population protection, contacts are focused on university and scientific research centres abroad, including the Member States of the European Union, Israel, and the Russian Federation.
A scientific team has been set up at the Department of Healthcare and Population Protection that focuses on high-security security research, one of the core programs of the 7th Framework Program of the European Union. The benefit of this team is that it involves emergency medicine specialists, disaster medicine experts and experts with experience in crisis and operational management, strategic development, budgeting and logistics.
The population protection is characterized as a set of activities, procedures and measures taken by competent authorities, other entities and individual citizens, aimed at minimizing negative impacts on lives, health, property and the environment. Based on principles applied in developed countries of the world, population protection in the Czech Republic remains a problem that needs to be addressed. Many citizens are still passive and rely on the activities of professionals.An important component of population protection is civil emergency preparedness, which is a comprehensive area of non-military planning concerning protection against the consequences of emergencies and crisis situations. Civil emergency preparedness in the Czech Republic's security system is primarily a procedural tool to prevent major emergencies and crisis situations, while ensuring readiness to manage them. Civil Emergency Preparedness is a superior set of activities within a national security system process tool that focuses on the following areas:
- fulfilling the tasks of population protection
- continuous operation of state administration bodies and local self-administrative bodies
- acceptable form of social and economic life
- operation of critical infrastructure
- public-private cooperation
- civilian resources to ensure necessary security
- civilian military cooperation
- civilian support for armed forces and security resources
Disaster Medicine is a dynamically developing field, with its needs based on the current political-economic situation, covering the economic crisis, involvement of NATO troops including the Czech Republic's Army in Iraq and Afghanistan, different concepts of justice as perceived by individual ethnicities and religions, disturbed relations between nations, increasing tensions, hatred, chauvinism, and nationalism are possible threats to the population of any state by fanatical individuals or groups.
Other important dangers to the population include transport accidents, rapid migration between territories with different epidemiological standards, natural disasters, disruptions in communication networks, and the targeting of large industrial centres. All of these issues can only be handled by well-trained experts.

Department of Natural Sciences is a research and teaching unit in the field of mathematics, physics, optics, biomechanics and analysis of human motion, biology, molecular biology, bio photonics, laser applications in biomedicine, solid state physics in biomedicine, nanotechnology in biomedicine, advanced biomedical signal processing, assistive technologies and virtual reality applied on biomedical tasks. The research in these areas is carried out by several cooperating research groups and teams.
Department of Natural Sciences currently participates in several bachelor and master study programs, offering a wide range of undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate courses. The department is responsible for the bachelor study program Optics and Optometry, master study program Instruments and Methods for Biomedicine, specialization Assistive Technologies in the master study program Biomedical and Clinical Informatics, and a PhD study program Assistive Technologies.Our Mission
Primarily, we strive for excellent research and training of young researchers in the field of biomechanics and analysis of human motion, bio photonics, laser applications in biomedicine, solid state physics in biomedicine, nanotechnology in biomedicine, advanced biomedical signal processing, assistive technologies and virtual reality applied to biomedical tasks. We foster international cooperation with prominent research centres over the world. We believe that excellent research positively influences the quality of education and the cooperation with industrial partners.
We strive for top education. We try to endow our students especially with persistent, long-term knowledge of system sciences, completed with up-to-date research findings. We believe that graduates with such knowledge can easily find their jobs in academia, industry and health care, from R&D over management and economics, to e.g. production of biomedical technology.

The main focus of the Department of Biomedical Informatics is the use of informatics in health care and biology. We guarantee and teach IT subjects across bachelor and master courses at FBME CTU. The Department of Biomedical Informatics is the guarantor of the bachelor's degree in Biomedical Informatics and the follow-up master's degree program in Biomedical and Clinical Informatics. It is a training centre for doctoral programs at FBME CTU. In addition to the development of specialized medical software, the department is engaged in research projects in the following areas:
- processing and evaluation of movement, especially for people with neurological diseases,
- robotics (development of artificial arms and aids for the disabled)
- image processing (MRI images of the brain, ultrasound images of blood vessels and x-ray images of teeth)
- processing and evaluation of brain signals (NIRS, signals from individual neurons),
- bioinformatics (DNA processing and evaluation and large data processing)
- medical data security (e-health, GDPR),
- facial image analysis to optimize aesthetic surgery operations.
We cooperate mainly with the Department of Neurology of the First Faculty of Medicine and the General Teaching Hospital in Prague, the Clinic of Plastic Surgery of the First Faculty of Medicine and Na Bulovce Hospital, the University of Graz, and the Universitätsklinik für Kinder- und Jugendchirurgie.

The department guarantees a three-year bachelor's degree in Information and Communication Technology in Medicine (ICTM) within the study program Biomedical and Clinical Engineering. The department also provides bachelor's, master's and doctoral courses in other study programs.
The department is also a training facility for doctoral students. There are 3 research teams at the department: Biotelemetry Systems, Quantification and Evaluation of the Rehabilitation Process and Telemedicine and Diabetes. The research activities of the department mainly include research and experimental development of biotelemetric, assistive and personal surveillance systems. The Department of Information and Communication Technologies in Medicine (KIT / 17120) was established on 16 December 2015 by amending the Statute of CTU FBME by transforming the Joint Workplace of Biomedical Engineering FBME CTU and 1st Medical Faculty of Charles University (SPA / 17220) dated 2 January 2001 and the Mutual Agreement on Cooperation concluded on 10 September 2003 between Charles University in Prague and the Czech Technical University in Prague in the Studničkova 7/2028 building in Prague 2.
