The Faculty of Biomedical Engineering is the second youngest faculty of the Czech Technical University (CTU) in Prague. It was established in 2005 as the transformed Institute of Biomedical Engineering. The history of the faculty dates back to 1996, when the Centre for Biomedical Engineering (CBME) was founded at the CTU to coordinate research and teaching activities in the field of biomedical engineering. The goals of CBME CTU were particularly focused on research. Owing to the diversity of the professional interests of the staff, it managed to cover a large segment of the biomedical engineering. It was therefore possible to deal with a wide range of scientific and research projects. In 2002 CBME fulfilled all necessary requirements to introduce a 3-year bachelor study programme “Biomedical and Clinical Technology”. Then the CBME was transformed into a university institute – the Institute of Biomedical Engineering of the CTU. The first director of the Institute was Prof. Ing. Svatava Konvičková, CSc, the coordinator of the CTU “Cross-disciplinary Research in the Biomedical Engineering” research programme, within which a majority of the scientific and research activities of the Institute have been carried out.

In 2003 the bachelor study programme „Biomedical and Clinical Technology“ was accredited and tuition began in the academic year 2003/04. Following the decision of the Academic Senate of CTU of the 15th December 2004, and in agreement with the Accreditation Board of the Czech Ministry of Education, the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering was founded. The faculty was registered by changing the Statute of the CTU at the Ministry of Education on 27th May 2005.

In the the academic year 2005/2006, the first 48 students of the bachelor programme graduated. Most of them decided to continue in the follow-up master programme of the same name accredited in the beginning of 2006. This double-specialization study program has three study branches - „Appliances and Methods for Biomedicine“, „Systematic Integration Processes in Health Care“ and „Biomedical Engineering“ in a full-time study form. The former is primarily intended for preparation of engineers for research as well as for implementation and maintenance of sophisticated technology in hospitals, while the latter offers preparation of engineers for managerial positions in the healthcare system. The education is project-oriented and is held in modern laboratories. Based on a recommendation of the Accreditation Committee of the Ministry and an approval of the Scientific Board of the Faculty, there are two different specializations within the study field since September 2009 „Appliances and Methods for Biomedicine“: „New Technologies for Biomedicine“, and „Imaging Systems in Medicine“.

In compliance with the “Long-term Plan for Educational, Scientific, Research, Development, Artistic and Other Creative Activities of the CTU", a newly accredited doctoral degree study programme „Biomedical and Clinical Engineering“ was opened in March 2007.

In 2007, an application for prolongation of the bachelor study field „Biomedical and Clinical Technology“ was accepted, and in line with the current legislation, the renamed study branch Biomedical Technology was opened in both full-time and combined study forms.

Since the academic year 2012/2013 we offer bachelor degree study programmes„Biomedical Technician“ and master degree study programmes Biomedical Engineering, Systematic Integration of Processes in Healthcare (all in full-time study) also in English for self-funding students.

Since the academic year 2017/2018 we offer master degree study programme Instruments and Methods for Biomedicine (in full-time study) in English for self-funding students

FBME is located in the town of Kladno. Students have accommodation and catering services available there, and many free-time activities, including participation in projects solved at the FBME.
