SUCCESSFUL STUDENT REPRESENTATION AT THE INTERNATIONAL FINAL OF EUROTAQATHON 2026
CTU students represented the university in the international final of the EuroTeQaThon 2026 competition. This follows on from the local rounds – Colliders, organized by the EuroTeQ Engineering University alliance. This year's theme was how to Enhance connections for sustainable futures.
EuroTeQaThon is an international competition based on the principle of Challenge-Based Learning, i.e. solving real challenges from practice in multidisciplinary and international teams. Over several weeks, students work intensively on innovative solutions to assignments from companies, institutions and industry partners. The emphasis is not only on technical knowledge, but also on creativity, teamwork, entrepreneurship and the ability to clearly present their own proposals.
“Compared to our partner schools, our students have only a very short time to work on their projects. However, their creativity and potential for solving problems are very similar to those of other teams. This event strengthens team spirit, but above all it connects all teams together. This is of fundamental importance for current (and not only) engineering education,” says Prof. Henri Achten, the main mentor of the CTU teams.
From local rounds to international finals
As part of this year’s spring round of Collider, students at CTU worked on topics related to smart brewery maintenance, energy capacity of networks or the design of the university space of the future.
The three best teams advanced to the international finals: e-kozel, Dream University (from FBME Lucie Fusillier a Helene Burkhard) and PRExit (from FBME Dhanraj Aligese), consisting of a total of 16 students. Collider offers participants a unique experience with international cooperation, working in interdisciplinary teams and developing prototypes or concepts with a real impact.
Congratulations to the winners
The finals of the competition – EuroTeQaThon – are took place in Denmark from 13 to 15 June. During these days, student teams worked hard to finalize and present their projects. The final presentations demonstrated the ability to transform engineering ideas into viable business models and brought creative ideas and practical solutions aimed at strengthening the links between people, nature and the economy.
The event concluded with the announcement of three winning teams who will be able to present their projects at the European Commission level:
- BESSaaS (École Polytechnique): An innovative solution to local grid congestion by installing battery storage directly where renewable energy is wasted. The project is designed to allow local residents to invest and earn, turning a negative community attitude into a profitable partnership.
- Peak Response (DTU): The project can use unused European solar household batteries by connecting them to a central software platform using a simple plug-and-play device. This creates a coordinated energy pool that stabilizes the energy grid while generating passive annual income for homeowners.
- Splitter (TU/e): The new approach uses physics-based machine learning to analyze sensor data in real time and prevent unpredictable degradation in green hydrogen electrolyzers. By optimizing operation and predicting maintenance needs, the software extends the life of the equipment and makes green hydrogen production cheaper and more powerful.
The Audience Award went to the Parkinsense (TU/e) team. Their solution replaces subjective and irregular medical examinations with a wearable device and app that continuously monitors the symptoms of Parkinson's disease in the real world. By providing objective data on symptom fluctuations in real time, the system helps doctors and patients make very accurate and cost-effective decisions.
All teams that did not end up on the podium are also greatly admired. We believe that all participants gained valuable experience from preparing the solution proposal and consulting with the international jury.
