Biomedical Technology – full-time three-year bachelor degree study program in English.

General characteristics of the study program

It is a university degree which is part of structured higher education studies according to the Bologna Declaration. It is only possible to be studied full-time with the standard length of study 3 years. Upon graduation, i.e. after a successful defence of a bachelor thesis and passing a final state examination, the graduate obtains a Bachelor's degree (abbreviated as B.Sc.).

Goals of study

Study program Biomedical Technology prepares mainly practically oriented graduates but due to the necessity of a deep theoretical background, it also prepares future students of the follow-up master study program Biomedical and Clinical Engineering at the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague but also at other universities in the Czech Republic and abroad. The students acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry, but also basic knowledge of biology, medical terminology, anatomy and human physiology, which are necessary for understanding basic biological processes in human organism. These are also indispensable for communication with physicians and other medical staff. The students are also acquainted with professional issues, which are focused on mastering the principles of operation and use of medical technology and medical informatics and the ability to effectively work with them. The most important courses that are relevant directly to the responsibilities of the future biomedical technicians are the following: Biomechanics and Biomaterials, Information Systems in Health Care, Medical Devices and Equipment, Patient and Device Simulators and Testers, Design and Construction of Medical Devices/Practical Exercises, Conventional and Tomographical Imaging Systems, Management of Health Care Technology, Clinical Laboratory Instrumentation, Equipment for Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation and Power Engineering with respect to the health care facility power distribution, safety rules, electrical devices and electrical motors applications. Students become familiar with the applicable legislation, economics and management of healthcare institutions. Emphasis is also put on language skills, which is focused on mastering situations biomedical technicians must be knowledgeable in.

Profile of the study program graduate

The graduate of the bachelor study program Biomedical technology is practically oriented with a broad technical knowledge in the field of biomedical and clinical technology and with very good language training. Emphasis is put on organizational and communicative skills and teamwork. The students have knowledge and skills to further develop and deepen their expertise as the biomedical and clinical technology develops. Graduates will be able to work in health care facilities within the scope of the following topics, i.e. competencies/responsibilities:  work with medical devices, including assistance during examination by imaging methods and during other examinations requiring the cooperation of technicians. They will be able to inspect and maintain instrumentation, including metrology, to keep its records, to carry out activities connected with the operation of medical technology and hospital information systems, to assess failure cases and to prepare the preventative measures, to operate the diagnostic software, participate in acquisition of medical devices including tenders, design medical technology kits and educate health-care staff concerning operation of medical technology and safety at work. These activities, which are closely related to the exercise of the profession in the healthcare sector, are linked to the applicable legislation in this area. Given the ability to engage in research and development, especially of an experimental nature, graduates will also be able to find employment in research institutes, as well as in companies involved in the development, production, certification, sale and servicing of medical equipment, or build-up of programs for medical equipment.

Upon graduation, i.e. after a successful defence of a master thesis and passing a final state examination, the graduate obtains a Master's degree (abbreviated as M.Sc.).

Goals of study

Study program Biomedical and Clinical Engineering prepares mainly practically oriented graduates as well as future students of the follow-up doctoral study programs at FBME CTU but also at other universities in the Czech Republic and abroad.

The graduate of the master study program will have knowledge of biomedical and clinical technology mainly in the following areas:

  • Theory, methods and procedures of signal and image processing; Therapeutic and diagnostic devices; Legal, economic and managerial issues in health care.

Application of mathematical and scientific disciplines in biomedical engineering will enable further development and deepening of the graduate's professional profile in line with current development in biomedical and clinical technology.

Profile of the study program graduate

Graduates with a biomedical engineer qualification are able to operate, inspect and maintain diagnostic and therapeutic equipment and software within the healthcare facility, including assistance to physicians during the examination of patients. They are able to provide activities related to the registration and operation of medical equipment, to evaluate cases of failure and to create concepts of preventative measures against these failures. Graduates can participate in the acquisition of medical diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including specification of requirements and carrying out tenders. They are able to train technical staff in the field of medical diagnostics and therapeutic techniques and work safety. Given the ability to engage in developmental and scientific research work, especially of an experimental nature, graduates can also find jobs in companies and institutions involved in the development, production, sale and servicing of medical devices, or creation of software for diagnostic and therapeutic devices and methods intended for health care.
